Xiaomi Redmi Note 11, a solid budget phone. Detailed Review

When people ask me which phone to buy when they’re  on a tight budget, my thoughts usually come down to either the budget Redmi phone from Xiaomi or one from Samsung. I've reviewed several over the years and have always been impressed with the value they offer for relatively little outlay.

Xiaomi is a company that targets every segment of the market, from its flagship Mi series to its cheap and fast Poco series. However, it's the latest addition to the Redmi Note range, fulfilling the company's vision of budget beauty. In other words, this Redmi Note 11 looks like a flagship phone, but is understated inside.

Xiaomi has launched a solid competitor with the Redmi Note 11. This deserves to compete with other budget phones. Thanks to its excellent build quality, attractive screen, and strong performance.

The Xiaomi sub-brand has added four new products to its line-up, including the Redmi Note 11. For some purchasers, it may be the best deal and serves as an introduction to the Redmi Note 11 series, but don’t dismiss it as a low-end burner; this phone has a lot of power for its price range.

Redmi Note 11 has a starting price of under 45k PKR

By falling below that mark,  the smartphone has a psychological advantage over its peers and allows it to remain competitive with the Samsung Galaxy A series.

Why should you consider Redmi Note 11 & why shouldn't you?

Some plus points.

•    Super AMOLED Display at 90Hz.
The phone's large AMOLED display does a lot to make the Redmi Note 11 look great on the front. Equipped with a 6.43-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels, the display produces excellent contrast and delivers rich, vivid colours.

The display is easy to read even in bright light. The bezel is slim and nice. The most attractive display in this price range.

HDR functionality is absent, but you won't notice much of a difference.

•    A flagship design.
At first glance, the Redmi Note 11 doesn’t seem like such a budget smartphone. It feels light but is solidly built by hand. The front follows the trend, bringing a taller display, thinner bezels, a slightly thicker chin, and a punching notch at the top of the central display. Redmi has chosen Gorilla Glass 3 to protect the display, which has excellent scratch resistance.

Elegance continues when turned inside out. It’s a smooth plastic that gently curves to the edges and fits comfortably in your hand. The quad camera array sits neatly inside the large rectangle in the upper left corner.
The large 50MP main sensor remained in the top third, and the remaining three lenses and flash lined up in the bottom square. It’s a good no-fuss look that’s hard to fault.

It offers some degree of water and dust resistance with an IP53 rating and also retains a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The volume and power buttons are on the right side when facing the phone, and the power button has a handy fingerprint sensor built into it.

•    Powerful Stereo speakers.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 11’s speakers are also above average. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 11’s bottom speaker is noticeably higher than the top speaker, but still provides a decent stereo effect and powerful enough output to cut out a good amount of ambient noise. Its sturdy stereo speakers are also advantageous for video streaming.

However, there are some notable pieces about the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 hardware. It features an IR blaster that allows the phone to act as a universal remote control using the Mi Remote app.

•    Huge 5000mAh battery & 33W super fast charger.

One of the Redmi Note 11’s finest features is the 5,000mAh battery. The battery life is undoubtedly one of the finest we’ve recently seen on a smartphone. By the time we went to bed, the battery had easily lasted us through the day. With some careful battery management, you could probably use the phone for a couple of days.

It’s impressive that watching an hour of streaming video at full brightness and low volume only reduced the battery’s capacity by 5%.
The 33W charger that comes with the Note 11 charges the phone from 0% to 100% in slightly over an hour.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 11’s 33W Super fast Charger takes the Phone from flat to 50% charge in just 26 minutes. It hits 90% in 51 minutes and  a full charge took 69 minutes. That is a little over from Xiaomi’s claim of 61 minutes.

When it comes to battery charging and battery life, there’s nothing to worry about.

A few compromises.

•    A 50-megapixel camera & a 13-megapixel selfie. Is this a mess?
Redmi Note 11 has a quad camera setup on the back which is guided by a 50-megapixel main sensor supported by an 8-megapixel ultra-wide sensor, a 2-megapixel macro sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The camera app is easy to use and feature-rich, so I have no complaints.
The Note 11 takes clean daytime shots that exhibit sharp focus and pleasing colours, but with little contrast. Photos taken in low light are softer, noisier, and less colourful.

The ultra-wide camera does pretty well in bright light, but loses a lot of shine when the sun goes down.

The macro camera isn’t great either, given its low resolution and lack of detail.

Budget phones at this price are rarely able to take great photos at night and the Redmi Note 11 continues this tradition. The night photos are pretty bad. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 has a dedicated night mode, but it doesn’t seem to improve image quality much. If there’s no or little light, even with night mode on, you might not get the shots you want. You might just get something usable if your subjects remain still and there is some light.

What about the selfie camera? A phone with a selfie camera that has a resolution of 13 megapixels. This camera can take slightly smoother, brighter selfies and as long as you don’t agree with the idea, it’s good enough to put on social media. Additionally, the rear shooter can only capture FHD (1080p) video at 30 frames per second.

•    A power efficient but weak chipset.
This  Redmi Note 11 4G is configured with a 6nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset. The brand has its Adreno 610 GPU installed on their devices to give you a great visual experience.
This Redmi Note 11 handles day-to-day tasks easily  and dominates the casual gaming arena, but don’t expect it to go smoothly through high-end games.

The Snapdragon 680 only supports 1080p displays at up to 90Hz, does not support a separate 5G modem, and does not support Wi-Fi 6. It does not playback HDR videos.

I haven’t had any major issues with interference or lag while using the handset. Of course, switching between screens and apps isn’t as smooth as on the iPhone 12/13 or Samsung Galaxy S22, because  you’re paying much less for hardware.

The good news is that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 doesn’t seem to heat up.

•    Conclusion.
Like any budget phone, the Redmi Note 11 is a compromise: The handset’s design, build quality, screen, and battery life are all excellent, but the rear camera quality and overall performance are where the price has been reduced.

If screen quality and battery life are more important to you than being able to play difficult games like Fortnite well, the Redmi Note 11 is a good choice.

The phone still has good value. Although it lacks a powerful gaming processor and Android 12 and 5G, the phone still provides a comprehensive smartphone experience.

It does a great job of handling the fundamentals, like the display, battery, and sound, as well as everyday tasks, without ever making you feel like you are missing out on much.
